Action at the Clinton Global Initiative
Non-Profit Organization Highlights for World Leaders its Vision for Expanding Global Community of Educators
Washington, D.C. (Oct. 2, 2008) – Curriki, an online community for creating and sharing open source K-12 curriculum, announced an expanded worldwide commitment during the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2008 Annual Meeting last week in New York City. Dr. Barbara “Bobbi” Kurshan, Executive Director of Curriki, presented the organization’s vision to extend free access to open educational resources worldwide. Established in 2005 as a project of the non-partisan William J. Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Since 2005, CGI members have made nearly 1,000 Commitments to Action valued at upwards of $30 billion to improve more than 200 million lives in over 150 countries around the world. “Curriki is thrilled to be recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative for our commitment to make learning possible for all students worldwide,” said Kurshan. “We’re hopeful that through the incredible network of visionary leaders, we can further extend the work we’re doing in creating a community where educators share high-quality educational material at no charge.” Through past Annual Meetings, CGI has brought together more than 80 current and former heads of state, hundreds of top CEOs and non-profit leaders, major philanthropists, and 10 of the last 16 Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The CGI community also includes: CGI University (CGI U), a forum to engage college students in global citizenship; CGI Asia, the first in a series of regional CGI meetings; and, MyCommitment.org, an online portal where anybody can make their own Commitment to Action. Curriki has more than 45,000 registered members, with more than 3,000 additional members joining the online community every month. The online repository is expected to grow the number of free, open source learning assets to more than 28,000 by the end of 2008. Each month, educators in more than 180 nations worldwide access Curriki. For more information, visit www.curriki.org.
