Scott McNealy, Co-Founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and served as CEO and Chairman of the Board for 22 years during which he piloted the company from startup to legendary Silicon Valley giant in computing infrastructure, network computing, and open source software. Under his watch, Sun Microsystems employed approximately 235,000 worldwide. Sun was sold to Oracle in 2010 for $7.4 billion.
McNealy is committed to innovation in technology and education and is an outspoken advocate for personal liberty and responsibility, small government, and free-market competition. He is heavily involved in advisory roles for companies that range from startup stage to large corporations. McNealy believes in the philosophy that “Without choice, you have no innovation. Without innovation, you have nothing.”
In March 2004, he led Sun to create the Global Education & Learning Community (GELC) to leverage open source to provide affordable lifelong learning for all students, no matter where they live. GELC was spun off in 2006 as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit now called Curriki. The organization’s name is a play on the combination of “curriculum” and “wiki”. Curriki is built on the XWiki platform, an open source development platform and “Next Generation Wiki” application developed in Java and released the LGPL open source license. Curriki’s mission is to eliminate the Education Divide – the gap between those who have access to high-quality education and those who do not – in the U.S. and worldwide. It’s online community of educators, learners and committed education experts works together to create quality materials that benefit teachers, parents and students globally. Currently, the site offers more than 74,000 free curriculum resources, engages more than 448,000 members, and has received over 11.1 million unique visits from educators and students from every country in the world.
Staying true to his Sun innovation roots, McNealy took a core group of Sun Microsystems alumni and founded Wayin in 2011, where he serves as Chairman of the Board. Wayin is a social intelligence and visualization company that makes tools for businesses to easily search, analyze, and display user generated social content to drive brand awareness and revenue growth. Wayin empowers organizations like the Denver Broncos, Blizzard Entertainment, AXS TV, and Nike to create real-time experiences for consumers that foster trust and drive action.
